On ‘New Years Eve’, 1914, the 2nd Grenadier Guards battalion of 4 (Guards) Brigade, 2nd Division, moved into the front line at Rue de Cailloux-Festubert in France. The battalion diary for the following day, 1st January, 1915, recorded that apart from the trench being flooded, the enemy were ‘busy’ with trench mortars and snipers all day which killed three and wounded another four. Harry Gardiner was one of those killed.
